A Red Lobster employee has raised a few eyebrows on social media after sharing how much she made in tips following a six-hour shift. Now, we all know that the tipping culture in the US is a highly debated topic. With the cost of living continuing to rise, it feels like people are becoming less inclined to tip. However, as we all know, people who work in the service industry rely heavily on customer tips in order to subsidize their income. But thanks to social media, some servers are being more open and honest about how much they can potentially make in a single shift. For example, TikToker and Red Lobster server Jasmine Anderson (<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@jasminepaints79" target="_blank" rel="noopener">@jasminepaints79</a>). Anderson, like many servers, relies on the generosity of customers in order to make a decent living. So she recently took to the video-sharing platform to reveal how much she made in a single six-hour shift. The results left people divided - with some being seriously impressed, and others being rather appalled. "So, I just finished a Friday night at Red Lobster," she starts the video. After explaining that her shift saw her cover 20 tables and a total of $1,500 in sales, Anderson started filtering through a pile of receipts and totaling up her tips. She then filters through each bill, recalling the tip she received. For example, on one $111 bill she received an $18 tip (16%). But on a $186 bill, she only received a $10 tip (5%), The highest was a $29 tip on a $94 bill (which works out at around 30%). To be fair, there were also some decent tips mixed in there, like the $29 tip she got for a $94 bill (a 30% tip) and a $108 bill that earned her $20 (an 18% tip). "I can’t complain for six hours," she says. After sharing the clip, the video went on to amass tens of thousands of views, with people flooding the comments section with their thoughts. "You made more in tips in 6 hours than I do as an [Registered Nurse] in 6 hours," one person commented. "More than a teacher," a second TikTok user echoed. A third wrote: "That's more than bank tellers make in my area! Most jobs are $12/hr or less. If you get $15+ you're one of the lucky ones!" But some viewers were actually disappointed by how low Jasmine's tips were, with one person commenting: "Wow, I thought I got tipped bad at my job... this is depressing." "Dang. People do not tip enough! This is why I always over tip," another added. "People suck with tipping! You barely made 15 percent," wrote one TikToker. Nevertheless, the overall consensus echoed that of Jasmine's thoughts - that she had a pretty decent shift and took home a lot more than a lot of others people out there. Of course, Jasmine was quick to point out that she only earns "$2.13 an hour" from the restaurant - hence why she and so many servers out there rely on tips.
